BOOK DESIGN CONCEPT

Selfmade entirely, as a exam project in book design for The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts “KADK”. The book is made to look and feel like a body. Using shapes of the female body and a skin colored palette. Visualizing the storytelling, about a girl struggling with weight, going from underweight to healthy. The text is graphically following her weight gain, with a growing text column inside. Starting as a wavy thin column and ending as a full sided column. It gives the effect of a flip-book, when the pages are turned rapidly, the wavy columns simulates motion of the body. The title of the book, is translated as “There is always someone to relief”, therefore you have to literally relief the book from the hardback bookcase. The book is designed to visually tell the story with few but strong elements.

HUD A POP-UP BOOK

HUD IS THE DANISH WORD FOR SKIN. HUD IS A POP-UP BOOK MADE AS A HOMMAGE OR TRIBUTE TO THE BEAUTIFUL COLORS OF HUMAN SKIN. HUD IS MADE FROM FITZPATRICKS’S SCALE, A SCALE FOR THE COLORS OF HUMAN SKINTYPES. THE SCALE IS DIVIDED IN 6 SKINTYPES. DIVIDED BY THE SKINTYPES RESPONSE TO UV-LIGHT, NOT ETHNICITY. APPLE USE THE SAME SCALE TO COLORIZE THEIR EMOJIS.

- TYPE II USUALLY BURNS, TANS MINIMALLY (WHITE; FAIR; BLOND OR RED HAIR; BLUE, GREEN, OR HAZEL EYES)

EACH PAGE STARTS AS A BLANK COLOUR AND WHEN PULLING THE POP-UP STRIP MORE FEATURES CATEGORIZED FOR THE SKINTYPE APPEARS. THE BOOK IS BINDED WITH A HARDBACK GOLD MIRRORED COVER, AND ENDS WITH A GOLD DOUBBLE SPREAD.
